European windows sometimes referred to as tilt and twist windows, operate very differently from the double-hung sash windows in the US. There are some advantages to these windows that might make them desirable in your home, but they are harder to come by outside of Europe.
The function of a tile and turn or European window is very different from the standard sash windows. The tilt and turn windows use a double hinge system that allows the window to be opened vertically at the top or horizontally, opening the entire window like a door.
There are some advantages to this design that allows the window to be open in just about any weather, so you get more fresh air inside the house. Originally designed in Germany, these windows have been adopted as the standard in many parts of Europe and are available through some window dealers in the US but typically must be ordered specifically for the home they will be used in.
Efficiency And Sealing
Because of the way European windows open, they have fewer issues with seals than most double-hung windows do. The windows never slide against the seals, so there is no chance of wearing them out as the window moves.
When the window opens, it leans in at the top or swings in away from the seal around the window frame. When the window is closed, it presses tightly gains the seal, making the window extremely efficient.
When the top is open, air moves into the room from the top of the frame. If it is raining outside, the window can be open without water coming into the house but still take advantage of the fresh air that comes with a rain shower.
Construction And Durability
European windows typically use plastic and metal in the construction, so the frames are durable. There are also windows available constructed from wood, but the cost of those windows can be significantly higher.
Using plastics in the construction means that manufacturers can use recycled material from the frames and make the window lighter and easier to work with. The windows open almost effortlessly and so are an excellent option for older homeowners that may struggle to get the double-hung sash windows in their home opened and closed.
The plastic also prevents frame rot over time, and the way they open makes them extremely easy to clean from inside the home. While these windows are not a good fit in every home and are more expensive than standard sash windows, ask the window shop in your area if they carry them or can order them if you are interested in using them in your home, or you can each out to a company like German System Windows.
