How To Know When Your Window Screens Need Replacing

When you open your windows to let in fresh air, you rely on your window screens to provide you with air without bugs and debris from outside. However, there comes a time when those screens need to be replaced. Here are some things to consider so you know when to replace the window screens or when to invest in complete replacement windows.

The Windows Aren't Working Properly

Your screen could be the reason why the windows themselves are suddenly not opening or closing properly. When this happens, you often check the window glass, frame, and sill, but forget to check the window screens. If the screen frames get bent, it can get in the way of using your windows. Look closely at the screen material and the frame of the screen. If it looks worn, bent, or like the screen material is tearing and starting to get in the way of the window operating, it is time to replace it.

There Are Holes and Tears

One of the more common signs that you need to replace the window screens is when there are obvious holes or tears in the screens. In some cases, they can be very subtle, so you might not notice them at first. Look closely at the screen from different angles, going inside and outside your home to take a look at them. The holes might not seem much bigger than the regular screening material holes, but they do make a difference in the quality of the screen. Tears happen frequently close to the frame where the screen material is starting to pull away from the frame. This is another good place to look when you want to find out if there are tears. If you find this type of damage, replacing it is often better than just repairing it.

You Have More Bugs in Your Home

You may not obviously see the holes or tears in the screens right away, but instead have signs that there must be some damage in the screen. This includes having more bugs and pests in your home. If it is the summer and you notice a lot more spiders and mosquitos than you normally have, it could be that you are leaving the windows open and they are finding a way through the window screens. Keep in mind that if is just the screening material that has damage, but the frames are in good condition, you can just replace the screen without the entire frame.
