Four Tasks That Need To Be Done When Installing Replacement Windows
If you want to improve your home's energy efficiency, replacement windows may be something you plan on doing. This is something that can help to add value to your home and reduce energy loss. Many people do not realize that these are special windows and there are some things that need to be done when installing them. Here are some of the things you will need to do when installing replacement windows in your home.
1. Correctly Measuring Windows Before Ordering The Replacements
Before you can even have the replacement windows installed, you will want to check all the openings. Many of these windows will give standard wood casings. You will want to measure the height and width of the inside of the window casing. In addition, check the measurements in different areas and diagonally to make sure they are square.
2. Removing The Sashes And Hardware To Prepare For Installation
When you are ready to install the new replacement windows, you will need to remove the sashes and any hardware. The sashes are the part of the window that opens and has glass in it. There is likely to be springs and tracks in the opening, which all have to be removed before you can install your new replacement windows.
3. Installing A Moisture Barrier And Sealing Around The Window Casing
A moisture barrier may also be needed for your windows. This can be done with a window tape that is used around the window. If you do not have moisture barriers, you may want to pry the casing loose from the opening to slide a moisture barrier in between the casing and wood framing. If you do not want to remove the casing, you can try doing this from the inside by removing the interior trim.
4. Adding Insulation To Windows Where It May Be Needed
When you have everything ready and the moisture barrier installed, you may also want to add insulation where needed. Often in older homes, there is no insulation between the casing. You can reduce drafts and improve energy efficiency by just using batten insulation for windows. This can be done by stuffing strips of insulation between the casing and wood framing. To do this, you may need to remove the interior trim of the windows.
